SWAT storm Thousand Oaks home, save elderly parents from adult son

An 36-year-old Ventura County man accused of threatening to kill his elderly parents and holding them captive was taken into custody after a SWAT team stormed the residence.

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies responded to a Thousand Oaks home in the 3500 block of Mapleknoll Place around 1:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports that a man armed with a knife was threatening his parents, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The victims told dispatchers their adult son, identified as Aaron Lieberman, threatened to kill them and prevented them from leaving an upstairs bedroom.

While deputies were responding, the sheriff’s communications center remained on the phone with one of the victims, receiving real-time updates about the situation.

Because of the reported threats, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office deployed a SWAT Team and Tactical Negotiations Unit.

“Beliving the victims were in imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury, SWAT team members made a forcible entry into the residence,” the release stated. “Inside an upstairs bedroom, SWAT team members encountered Lieberman, who grabbed the rifle of one of the SWAT team members. A use-of-force incident ensued, during which Lieberman was struck with a TASER and taken into custody without further incident.”

Neither victim was injured during the incident.

Detectives later arrested Lieberman on suspicion of making criminal threats, false imprisonment, arson of personal property, elder abuse, resisting an executive officer and attempting to remove or seize a firearm from a peace officer.

Lieberman was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center for medical clearance before being booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility.

He is being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.

The investigation remains ongoing.
