Very EMOTIONAL News!!! EastEnders star teases Sonia’s future – one year on from emotional exit
EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy has teased a potential return for Sonia Fowler, following her emotional exit last year. The actor bid farewell to Albert Square in April 2025, after playing the soap character on-and-off since 1993.
Sonia’s departure storyline saw her tying up loose ends in Walford, as she decided to embark on a new adventure in Bali with her daughters Bex and Julia and her sister Bianca.
In her final scenes, Sonia headed off into the sunset in a speedboat, which was attached to her getaway car. With Bex behind the wheel, Sonia and Bianca waved goodbye to the Square, with Sonia playing the trumpet in a hilarious nod to her iconic instrument.

In an article for The Guardian, Cassidy described her exit as “a lovely, funny send-off”, but explained that she left the soap in order to be more present in her children’s lives.
“I won’t miss the relentless schedule – having to skip the kids’ assemblies, never being able to book a doctor’s appointment or make plans with friends.
“This industry isn’t very friendly for mums, and I want to be home a lot more now,” she said.
Despite this, the actor didn’t rule out a return to EastEnders in the future, and hinted that she may return to her beloved character.
“A lot of actors are very bitter about their soap origins… I just see a character who has given me so much.
“That’s why I’ve been able to leave again in a really amicable manner, and why maybe I’ll go back once more. I love Sonia, and the trumpet. All of her is a part of me.”
Since her exit, Cassidy has gone back to education in order to train as a carer, after helping to look after her father before his death. The star’s new documentary series Natalie Cassidy: Caring Together is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and sees her learning the ropes of the field alongside health and social care professionals.
While Natalie Cassidy may have stepped away from Albert Square for now, fans of EastEnders are far from ready to say goodbye to Sonia Fowler forever. In fact, ever since her emotional departure aired, speculation has continued to grow regarding how and when the beloved character could eventually make her way back to Walford.
For many viewers, Sonia has become one of the most recognizable faces in EastEnders history. Having first appeared as a teenager in the early 1990s, she grew up in front of the audience, experiencing countless highs and lows over the decades. From family feuds and heartbreaking losses to unexpected romances and dramatic revelations, Sonia’s journey has been woven into the fabric of the Square for more than thirty years.
That long history is one reason why many fans believe her story is not truly finished.
Social media has remained filled with discussions about Sonia’s future since Natalie Cassidy’s departure. Some viewers have suggested that Sonia’s new life in Bali could eventually encounter difficulties, forcing her to return home. Others have theorized that a major family crisis involving Bianca or another member of the Fowler family could bring her back to Walford sooner than expected.
The beauty of Sonia’s exit was that it never felt like a permanent goodbye. Unlike some characters who leave under tragic circumstances or whose storylines reach a definitive conclusion, Sonia departed with hope, optimism, and a clear path forward. She wasn’t running away from danger or heartbreak. Instead, she was choosing a fresh start and a chance to focus on her family.
That open-ended departure has only fueled expectations that EastEnders producers intentionally left the door wide open for a future comeback.
Natalie Cassidy herself has often spoken warmly about her time on the soap, something that stands out in an industry where some actors attempt to distance themselves from their early television roles. Rather than viewing Sonia as a chapter she has moved beyond, Cassidy frequently acknowledges the enormous impact the character has had on her life and career.
Fans have praised that attitude, noting that her affection for the role makes a future return seem much more realistic than it might otherwise be.
In recent interviews, Cassidy has reflected on the unique relationship she shares with EastEnders viewers. Generations of audiences have watched Sonia evolve from an awkward teenager into a devoted mother, and many feel personally connected to her journey. Because of that bond, every mention of a possible return generates excitement across the show’s fan community.
There is also the question of timing.
EastEnders is entering a period filled with major story developments, and long-time viewers know that anniversaries and special events often provide the perfect opportunity for familiar faces to reappear. The soap has a long tradition of bringing back beloved characters during significant milestones, creating emotional reunions that resonate with audiences.
Could Sonia be part of one of those future celebrations?
Many fans certainly hope so.
The Fowler family remains one of the most important families in EastEnders history, and Sonia’s absence leaves a noticeable gap. Even though other characters continue to carry the family’s legacy, Sonia has always served as a bridge between multiple generations of the Square. Her return could instantly reconnect several storylines and provide opportunities for both nostalgia and fresh drama.
Another factor contributing to the ongoing speculation is Cassidy’s new professional journey outside the soap.
Following her departure, she chose to pursue training in the care sector, inspired by her personal experiences helping to care for her father during his illness. The decision revealed a different side of the actress and earned praise from many viewers who admired her commitment to making a meaningful difference outside television.
Her documentary project has also introduced her to new audiences, showcasing her compassion, dedication, and willingness to learn.
Yet despite these new ventures, fans continue to associate her strongly with Sonia Fowler.
That connection may never disappear.
In many ways, Sonia represents the heart of EastEnders. She is not a glamorous villain, a scheming businesswoman, or a larger-than-life criminal mastermind. Instead, she is an ordinary person trying to navigate life’s challenges while protecting the people she loves. Those relatable qualities are exactly what have made her such an enduring character over the years.
As a result, discussions about her future remain remarkably active even months after her exit.
Some fan theories have become increasingly elaborate. One popular prediction suggests that Sonia could return after receiving worrying news from Walford, prompting an emergency trip home. Another theory imagines Bianca becoming involved in a dramatic storyline that requires Sonia’s support. Others speculate that one of her daughters could decide to move back to London, creating a natural reason for Sonia to revisit the Square.
Of course, these theories remain purely speculative.
For now, Sonia is enjoying her new life away from Walford, and Natalie Cassidy appears focused on balancing family commitments with her evolving career. Nevertheless, her comments have made one thing abundantly clear: she has not closed the door on EastEnders.
That simple fact is enough to keep fans hopeful.
Soap history has shown repeatedly that departures are rarely forever. Some characters return after a few months, while others stay away for years before making a dramatic comeback. The unpredictable nature of the genre means that almost anything is possible.
And when it comes to Sonia Fowler, viewers know there are still countless stories left to tell.
Whether she returns next year, several years from now, or during a major anniversary event, her comeback would undoubtedly be one of the most talked-about moments in recent EastEnders history. The character’s popularity remains strong, and Natalie Cassidy’s continued affection for the role suggests that the possibility is very real.
Until then, fans will continue to watch, speculate, and hope.
Because while Sonia may have sailed away from Albert Square in that memorable speedboat, complete with a trumpet performance that perfectly captured her unique personality, many viewers believe her final scene was not an ending at all.
Instead, it may have been the beginning of a brand-new chapter—one that could eventually lead her right back to the place she has called home for most of her life.
And if that day ever comes, Walford will undoubtedly be ready to welcome Sonia Fowler back with open arms.
